Our Speciality

Engine Rebuilding

Complete engine rebuilds carried out to manufacturer specifications. We fix what others can't.

Why Choose Piston Pros

Engine rebuilding is our core speciality - it's what we were built to do. While most garages will recommend a replacement engine, we have the skills, equipment and experience to rebuild your existing engine to a standard that rivals a new unit.

A professionally rebuilt engine can last as long as the original - often longer and at a fraction of the cost of a new or reconditioned replacement. We work on petrol and diesel engines across all makes and models, from everyday family cars to performance and commercial vehicles.

How We Work

The Rebuild Process

Every engine rebuild follows a rigorous, structured process. No shortcuts, no guesswork.

01

Initial Assessment & Quote

We start with a thorough assessment of your engine — checking compression, oil pressure, and running condition. We'll give you an honest diagnosis and a clear, itemised quote before any work begins. No surprises.

02

Full Engine Strip-Down

The engine is completely removed from the vehicle and stripped down to the bare block. Every component is catalogued, inspected and measured. We photograph the process so you can see exactly what we found.

03

Precision Measurement & Inspection

All critical dimensions are measured against manufacturer specifications - bores, crankshaft journals, bearing clearances, valve seats and more. This tells us exactly what machining and parts are required.

04

Machining & Parts

Where required, we coordinate with trusted engineering partners for precision machining - boring, honing, crankshaft grinding and line boring. We source quality OEM or equivalent parts for every component being replaced.

05

Rebuild & Assembly

The engine is rebuilt to manufacturer specifications using calibrated torque settings throughout. New gaskets, seals, bearings and rings are fitted as standard. The assembled engine is primed before first start.

06

Run-In, Test & Refit

The rebuilt engine is run-in on a controlled cycle, oil pressure and temperature are monitored, and the engine is checked for leaks before being refitted to the vehicle. A final road test confirms everything is working correctly.

Choosing the Right Option

Types of Engine Rebuild

Most common

Standard Rebuild

The engine is stripped, measured, and rebuilt to original manufacturer specifications using OEM-equivalent parts. Worn components within tolerance are replaced as standard; components outside tolerance are machined or replaced and quoted separately. Suitable for the vast majority of petrol and diesel engines.

Best for

High-mileage engines, oil consumption, compression loss, bottom-end knock

Comprehensive

Full Recondition

Everything in a standard rebuild, plus a full cylinder head recondition (new valve guides, valve seats recut, valves lapped), crankshaft regrind as standard, and a full balance of rotating assembly. The engine is returned to as-new condition throughout — not just the components that need it.

Best for

Engines with unknown history, high-performance applications, or where longevity is the priority

Specialist

Performance Build

A bespoke build using uprated components — forged pistons, uprated bearings, ported and polished head, performance camshaft, or increased displacement. Every performance build is scoped individually. We work with you to define the power target and build to that specification.

Best for

Modified vehicles, track use, tuned engines, or customers wanting more than standard power

12-Month Warranty

Every engine rebuilt by Piston Pros comes with a 12-month / 12,000-mile warranty on parts and labour. We stand behind our work - if something isn't right, we'll fix it.

* Warranty subject to terms and conditions. Excludes damage caused by subsequent neglect, incorrect oil specification, or external factors.

Honest Expectations

What's Not Automatically Included

The following items are assessed during strip-down and quoted separately if required. We will always advise you before proceeding with any additional work.

New pistons

If bores are worn beyond the maximum oversize or pistons are damaged, new pistons are required. This is quoted separately once measurements are taken.

Crankshaft replacement

If the crankshaft is cracked, beyond regrind tolerance, or has suffered severe journal damage, a replacement crankshaft is quoted separately.

Camshaft replacement

Worn or damaged camshaft lobes are assessed during inspection. Replacement is quoted separately if required.

Cylinder head replacement

If the head is cracked or warped beyond the maximum skim tolerance, a replacement head is required and quoted separately.

Turbocharger

Turbo reconditioning or replacement is a separate service. We can include it in the same job — just let us know when requesting your quote.

Ancillary components

Alternator, starter motor, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor and similar ancillaries are not included unless specifically agreed.

Cooling system flush and thermostat

Recommended alongside any rebuild but quoted as an add-on. We will advise if the cooling system shows signs of contamination.

Flywheel and clutch

With the engine out, it is an ideal time to replace the clutch and resurface or replace the flywheel. This is quoted separately on request.

Is It Right For You?

When to Consider A Rebuild

High oil consumption

Burning oil, blue smoke from the exhaust, or oil loss between services.

Loss of compression

Lack of power, misfires, or a compression test showing low or uneven readings.

Knocking or rattling

Bottom-end knock, piston slap, or timing chain rattle indicating internal wear.

Overheating damage

Head gasket failure, warped head, or overheating that has caused internal damage.

High-mileage engine

A high-mileage engine showing signs of wear that a service alone won't resolve.

Seized or damaged engine

Catastrophic failure, spun bearing, or seized engine following oil starvation.
